Koyaanisquatsi – Hopi for ‘life out of balance’ – is a 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio, with a music score by Phillip Glass (which was later used in the 2009 film Watchmen), and cinematography by Ron Fricke. While 120 minutes of non-narrative, slow-motion, time-lapse film may not be your idea of a fun night in, personally I’ve found it a major source of creativity which has sparked the theme of my work – how we psychologically and physiologically contest space – for the past 3 years.
The film makes as much sense now as it did when it was made 30 years ago, exploring themes of sustainability, work-life balance, and the dissolved-responsibility-nature of human beings; it’s definitely worth the time:
